FromSoftware’s Future Games and Elden Ring’s Co-op Mod

FromSoftware’s Future Games and Elden Ring’s Co-op Mod

Hidetaka Miyazaki, the director of Elden Ring, is well acquainted with the Seamless Co-op mod for the game and may have even gained some insights from it.

As the highly anticipated Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree DLC is set to release in less than a week, players are gearing up for the season. Following a surprise announcement that only a third of players had fulfilled the in-game criteria to unlock the expansion, experienced Tarnished players immediately began assisting others with the necessary boss battles.

If you happen to need some additional assistance, it might be beneficial to enlist the help of a selfless friend through Elden Ring’s co-op feature. While it may have its challenges, even Hidetaka Miyazaki, the president of FromSoftware, recognizes the potential benefits.

The popular mod, ‘Seamless Co-op’, for Elden Ring is highly sought after by PC players as it simplifies multiplayer with friends. In a recent interview with PC Gamer, Miyazaki disclosed that FromSoftware was aware of the mod and acknowledged its impact on the game, even considering implementing similar ideas in their future games.

The co-op gameplay in Elden Ring is slightly more forgiving compared to previous Souls games, although it still includes certain limitations that may prove challenging for players who are not accustomed to FromSoftware’s distinctive multiplayer approach. These limitations may include the need to use consumable items, restricted access to certain areas, and the unfortunate loss of the loyal horse Torrent.

The Seamless Co-op mod for Elden Ring eliminates many of these frustrations by enabling a group of up to five players to play through the entire game together. Even if one player dies, the connection remains intact and progress on the map and Sites of Grace is shared. Additionally, everyone has access to Torrent. While some may think this significant change to the Elden Ring experience would not sit well with its creator, Miyazaki recognizes the demand for these features.

Miyazaki clarified that they do not actively oppose or wish to downplay the experience of playing the game together. With Elden Ring, their goal was to create a more relaxed and casual style where players could drop in, defeat a boss, and then drop out. This approach does not impose any technical limitations on the player and allows them to focus on completing a task before moving on.

This style of dropping in and out has been a consistent feature in previous Soulsborne titles, however, with each new release, the games have gradually been eliminating more of the tedious aspects. Miyazaki specifically addressed this in regards to Elden Ring’s Seamless Co-op mod, acknowledging that its changes may influence the developer’s approach to co-op in the future.

“He acknowledged that while they currently do not have plans to explore ideas such as playing with a friend in a complete co-op experience, it is not to say that they will not consider incorporating such concepts in their future games.”

Despite not being a guarantee, the popularity of the Seamless Co-op mod is a clear indication of its appeal. With over 3.6 million downloads, it shows that there is a strong demand for this type of experience.

With the possibility of an elusive Elden Ring sequel, we may finally witness a similar style of multiplayer in the game.
