Gabriel Macht’s Advice for Law Students Inspired by Suits

Gabriel Macht expresses his concern for individuals who have decided to pursue a career in law inspired by his portrayal of Harvey Specter in the popular television series Suits. Macht often shares the same sentiment whenever he meets young aspiring lawyers who credit the show for their career choice.

In the 1980s, the legal drama LA Law captivated audiences and inspired many to enter the legal field. Similarly, Suits, which debuted on the USA Network in 2011, seems to have influenced a new generation of legal professionals.

The series follows a high-powered attorney and his unlikely partner, a college dropout with a remarkable intellect and photographic memory, in navigating the complexities of a high-stakes law firm. After running for nine seasons and 134 episodes, Suits gained renewed popularity following its release on Netflix in 2023, making it more relevant than ever.

Gabriel Macht’s Apology to Aspiring Lawyers

As the actor behind the charismatic Harvey Specter, Macht feels a sense of responsibility for the impression the show leaves on its viewers. He acknowledges the stark contrast between the dramatic, fast-paced life depicted in Suits and the reality of legal practice.

Macht explains to People: “So many kids have gone to law school because of the show. They envision a world filled with excitement, loyalty, and clever banter. When fans approach me stating, ‘I went to law school because of you, ’ I feel compelled to apologize.” He continues, saying, “I’m sorry. If you enjoy reading, that’s fantastic, because you’ll be spending many hours with your head buried in books.”

The resurgence of Suits on Netflix has also paved the way for a spin-off titled Suits LA, which has received the green light for development. Although it will introduce a new ensemble of characters, the lead, Ted Black (portrayed by Steven Amell), has a history with Harvey Specter, resulting in Macht making a guest appearance in the upcoming season.

Macht conveys his best wishes to the new generation of legal characters, stating, “I’m excited for them to take the ball and run with it.”
