Gege Akutami confirms Shinjuku as Jujutsu Kaisen’s final arc

On Wednesday, July 10, 2024, fans began to translate and share the questions and answers from the Gege Akutami JUJUTSU KAISEN Exhibition that took place at Shibuya Hikarie in Japan. According to the latest information, Akutami has officially announced that the manga is currently in its final arc, the Shinjuku Showdown arc. This confirmation from Akutami is the first to validate the theories that fans have had for a while now.

The information was reported by a reliable source, X (previously known as Twitter) user and renowned general series news source @eagle97jjk (alen). Their translations were then authenticated by esteemed series leaker @Go_Jover (Myamura). Although these translations are not official, they are most likely accurate in confirming Akutami’s announcement that the Shinjuku Showdown arc will be the final arc in Jujutsu Kaisen.

Shinjuku Showdown: Jujutsu Kaisen’s Final Arc with Culling Game Style Subarcs

Although the Shinjuku Showdown arc is set to be the last arc in Jujutsu Kaisen, it does not necessarily mean that the series will conclude immediately after Sukuna’s defeat. Similar to the Culling Game arc, the Shinjuku Showdown arc could potentially be divided into several subarcs, serving as an “epilogue”to the series and providing a thorough resolution while still maintaining the arc as the final one.

Despite not being confirmed by Akutami during the exhibition, fans are confident that this will happen. This theory is supported by the numerous unresolved plot points, including a potential Heian era flashback, the consequences of the merger, the current situation of Tengen, and other mysteries. Given the number of unanswered questions, it is highly likely that there will be several subarcs to gradually reveal the answers.

The interview with Akutami not only revealed significant updates about the future of the manga, but also delved into other topics. These included the return of Nobara Kugisaki and Satoru Gojo, the development of the Culling Game arc and its role as a pivotal point in the story. Additionally, Akutami shared rough sketches of memorable scenes from the series, including Gojo’s triumphant declaration upon his release and return.

Akutami’s manga series, which was first published in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in March 2018, is still ongoing and regularly serialized there today. Currently, out of the 262 chapters that have been published, 245 have been compiled into 27 volumes, 22 of which are available in English.

In October 2020, MAPPA Studios adapted the series into a television anime. As of now, the show has aired two full seasons. MAPPA has also announced that they are currently working on a third season, which will cover the Culling Game arc mentioned previously.
