Honobu Yonezawa’s Shoushimin Mystery Novel Anime Adaptation Trailer Released

Honobu Yonezawa, the creator of the beloved mystery slice-of-life series Hyouka, has finally returned with a new and captivating mystery series, Shoushimin (How to Become Ordinary). This highly anticipated novel series has been adapted into an exhilarating anime that will debut on the channel’s NUMAnimation block in the thrilling month of July.

On June 8, 2024, when the new trailer for Shoushimin was released, fans were filled with excitement. The expectations for another brilliant work from Honobu Yonezawa were sky-high, building up the anticipation for an exhilarating anime series.

Following the conclusion of Hyouka, Shoushimin will mark the first anime adaptation of Honobu Yonezawa’s work. The highly anticipated anime is set to premiere on July 6, 2024 and will be animated by Lapin Track.


The plot centers around Jōgorō Kobato and Yuki Osanai, two adolescents striving for a modest existence in their lower middle-class status. Yet, they become entangled in a sequence of peculiar and unexplainable occurrences, disrupting their desire for an ordinary life. The teaser provides a glimpse into the lives of the anime’s main characters and offers a preview of the narrative.

Details on Staff, Cast, and Key Visual Revealed

In addition to the trailer, the anime’s main cast and staff have also been announced. The director, Mamoru Kanbe, has a notable portfolio including Elfen Lied, The Promised Neverland, and You and Me. The series script overseer, Toshiya Ono, has previously worked on The Promised Neverland, Shadows House, and 86. Atsushi Saitō, the character designer, has lent his talents to projects such as Black Fox and Love Live! Superstar!!. The composer, Takahiro Obata, has previously created music for popular series such as Cinderella Nine and The Promised Neverland.

The lead roles in the anime will be played by Shūichirō Umeda as Jōgorō Kobato and Hina Yomiya as Yuki Osanai, the main characters depicted in the key visual of the series.

Tokyo Sogensha has published these novels as a starting point for the series, which also comprises of two Shuki Gentei Kuri Kinton Jiken (The Case of the Autumn-time Limited-Edition Candied Chestnuts and Sweet Potatoes) books and the Paris Macaron no Nazo (The Mystery of the Paris Macaron) book, as well as various standalone stories.
