Sony has ambitious plans to commence filming for its adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn in 2026, but before the production can kick off, there’s a crucial matter that needs resolution.

This film marks another venture for Sony as it aims to replicate the cinematic success garnered from previous adaptations like Uncharted, Gran Turismo, and Until Dawn. Notably, the recent The Last of Us television series has showcased the potential of gaming narratives in visual media, setting a strong precedent for future adaptations.

In addition to Horizon Zero Dawn, PlayStation Productions is actively working on several other game adaptations, including a new Resident Evil film directed by Zach Cregger, as well as films for The Ghost of Tsushima and Helldivers.

According to a recent legal document reviewed by The Game Post, Sony is gearing up to film the Horizon Zero Dawn movie with a completed script and aims for a theatrical release in 2027. However, a director is yet to be appointed, which is a pivotal step in moving forward with the project.

Once a director is secured, discussions regarding the cast and the creative vision for the protagonist, Aloy, can begin. Interestingly, Sony had initially considered a Netflix series consisting of eight episodes but decided to halt those plans due to serious allegations of toxic behavior involving showrunner Steve Blackman, who was previously associated with The Umbrella Academy.

Though the cancellation was disappointing at the time, it may ultimately benefit the narrative’s adaptation as the extensive world-building and post-apocalyptic themes inherent in Horizon Zero Dawn are more suited for a feature film format.

Ultimately, selecting the right director will be critical for the film’s success. Sony must identify a visionary who can authentically translate the grandeur of this sci-fi universe into a compelling cinematic experience. Directors such as Neill Blomkamp or Gareth Edwards could be excellent options to consider, given their affinity for crafting engaging science fiction narratives.
