On April 24th, the debut song “Magnetic”by ILLIT reportedly reached No.1 on major music charts in Korea, including Melon, Genie, Bugs, VIBE, and Flo. This achievement surpassed popular groups like (G)I-DLE and TWS, ultimately propelling ILLIT to the top spot.
ILLIT is a sub-label of Belift Lab under HYBE. The label is currently embroiled in a dispute with its parent company, as ADOR, another label under HYBE, is claiming ownership of management rights. The conflict arose when ADOR’s CEO, Min Hee-jin, accused ILLIT of copying her creation, NewJeans. As a result, HYBE conducted an audit on ADOR and its executives after evidence surfaced of ADOR’s attempt to break away from HYBE.
The controversy surrounding ILLIT grew when Min Hee-jin accused them of being a copy of NewJeans. Even before their debut, ILLIT had caused a stir due to their similar music style and concept to NewJeans. As the youngest group of HYBE after NewJeans, ILLIT is attracting a lot of interest with their concept of “pure teenage girls.”
ILLIT has achieved the feat of being the first girl group to have their debut title song reach the top spot on both music shows and music charts.
Despite speculations in the music industry that HYBE’s internal conflict would have a negative impact on the image of ILLIT, a newly debuted group, the group has shown continued success by rising on charts. This can be attributed to the high quality of their debut song, which seems to have a strong appeal to the public. In comparison, NewJeans does not seem to have the same level of appeal.

In fact, it even set a new record for a K-pop debut song by entering the prestigious US Billboard Main Song Chart ‘Hot 100’.
