IVE recently kicked off 2025 with the release of their new track, “Rebel Heart,” which serves as the lead single from their third EP titled “Ive Empathy.” As a prominent player in the fourth generation of K-pop girl groups, IVE has consistently dominated digital music charts with each new release, prompting high expectations for their latest comeback.
However, after the previous release, “HEYA,” the group has struggled to replicate its past successes, failing to secure a Perfect All-Kill and seeing their domestic chart performance lagging compared to their explosive results in 2022-2023.
The Nature of “Rebel Heart”
“Rebel Heart,” as the title track of their third EP, has received a spectrum of reviews. While it maintains IVE’s hallmark youthful and glamorous image, it has been described as visually stunning yet lacking in innovative excitement. A standout moment from the music video features Jang Wonyoung as a mesmerizing bride whose gaze seems to turn everything to ash. Musically, the song relies on familiar pop elements, showcasing a catchy hook. Overall, the reception can be summed up as “safe,” raising questions about future creative directions.

Despite the group’s return occurring during a relatively “uncompetitive” timeframe, audience reaction has been modest at best. Currently, IVE is facing competition from groups such as SEVENTEEN BSS and ENHYPEN. Once known for their ability to launch tracks straight into the top five on iChart, IVE’s recent performance has raised eyebrows among fans and industry experts alike.
Worrying Chart Results
Upon its release on January 13, 2025, “Rebel Heart” disappointingly ranked low across several digital platforms. As of January 14, the song was placed at #77 on MelOn, #30 on Genie, #1 on Bugs, and #90 on FLO. These numbers, especially on MelOn — South Korea’s leading music service — have shocked fans, given IVE’s previous ability to achieve “all-kill” status with each launch.
In just four days, the music video for “Rebel Heart” amassed around 10 million views, yet this reflects a stagnation in growth, fueling concerns that IVE’s popularity may be waning.

Analyzing the Decline in Popularity
The public perception of IVE is largely tied to its prominent members, particularly “K-pop princess” Jang Wonyoung and the highly marketable Ahn Yujin, while the remaining members often go unnoticed. This focus from Starship Entertainment on promoting only these two members has potentially overshadowed the full group’s appeal.

Since their debut in late 2021, IVE finds itself navigating its fourth year in a fiercely competitive K-pop landscape. Many girl groups struggle to maintain long-term popularity, and some industry analysts warn that Starship’s strategy of elevating select members at the expense of the collective may be jeopardizing the group’s sustainability. Once the initial fanfare fades, a relatively smaller fanbase in comparison to male groups could leave IVE vulnerable.
Compounding the issue, shifts in musical trends within South Korea indicate that idol groups may be experiencing a decline in favorability, while bands, such as DAY6 and QWER, are enjoying a resurgence. This trend suggests that IVE’s struggles may not solely be a reflection of their internal dynamics, but could also be indicative of broader changes within the industry.
Looking Ahead for IVE
As we embark on IVE’s 2025 journey, it’s essential to remember that not every K-pop lead single garners immediate acclaim. The performance of the title track should be observed over time, especially with more promotional activities on the horizon.
Given that an EP is still forthcoming, it is crucial that IVE is afforded the time to build momentum before conclusions regarding their future are drawn.
