Jake Paul’s highly anticipated showdown with Mexican boxing icon, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, has been abruptly halted at the final stages of negotiation. Canelo now has other commitments, throwing a wrench into what could have been a blockbuster event.

In recent years, Jake Paul has set his sights on major figures in the world of combat sports. Notably, he has frequently targeted Conor McGregor with his brash remarks, and more recently, he aimed his sights at Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez as well.

Initially, Canelo dismissed Paul’s provocations, advising him to concentrate on his burgeoning boxing career. However, as Paul has gained traction and credibility in boxing circles, Canelo hinted at the possibility of a matchup between the two.

On February 3, reports emerged that the fight might finally be in the works, with plans for an event in Las Vegas coinciding with Canelo’s annual Cinco De Mayo celebration. Unfortunately, that scenario has now fallen through.

Breakdown of the Canelo-Paulo Negotiation

Instead of facing Jake Paul, Canelo Alvarez has opted for a lucrative four-fight contract, set to unfold in Saudi Arabia. This agreement will include a much-anticipated bout against Terence Crawford.

ESPN’s Mike Coppinger provided insight into this unexpected turn of events, stating, “In a stunning, 11th-hour development with the Jake Paul fight on the one-yard line, Canelo Alvarez has instead closed a four-fight deal with Turki Alalshikh and Riyadh Season to salvage the Terence Crawford mega fight in September.”

Turki Alalshikh, the Chairman of the General Entertainment Authority in Saudi Arabia, has previously expressed his disinterest in promoting Jake Paul fights, especially after Paul’s defeat to Tommy Fury.“Please, we don’t want any YouTuber fights again, ” he stated during a March 2024 interview with DAZN.

In reference to the deal with Canelo, he added, “Canelo only fights real fighters, ” further emphasizing his stance against showcasing influencer bouts.

Reactions and Future Prospects

KSI, an adversary of Jake Paul, also seized the moment to mock him for the failed negotiation with Canelo. In a recent Instagram story, KSI taunted, “Now what buddy? Keep running from me bro.”

While Jake Paul has vowed to make a fight announcement soon, his aspirations to face Canelo will have to be postponed. Fans are left awaiting the future of this controversial fighter, eager to see what comes next.
