Excitement is in the air with the announcement of Krypto’s official appearance in the upcoming Superman film. However, it seems that Krypto’s role will go beyond just being a companion in the snowy landscapes, as clarified by director James Gunn.

There’s something uniquely captivating about a canine character stealing the spotlight from a predominantly human cast. Following films like The Artist and Anatomy of a Fall, it’s now DC’s opportunity to showcase their charm through Krypto.

In this adaptation, Superman grapples with his Kryptonian origins and human upbringing as Clark Kent, all while supported by his devoted dog, Krypto. This character is brought to life through innovative visual effects, using a blend of 3D modeling inspired by Gunn’s own dog, Ozu, and real-life performance from a stand-in named Jolene.

Yet, one has to wonder: will Krypto remain in the background as merely a sidekick? For those following Gunn’s social media closely, hints suggest a standalone animated series for Krypto could be on the horizon.

James Gunn Teases a Potential Krypto Spinoff

We’re not discussing the previously released DC League of Super-Pets. According to a recent interaction on Instagram, James Gunn seems to imply that an animated series featuring Krypto could be in the works. This revelation came about through a fan comment on one of Gunn’s posts.

A fan expressed enthusiasm for an animated spinoff, prompting Gunn to reply, “You’re in luck.”While this could refer to the previously announced Krypto short films, it opens the door to the possibility of more extensive projects down the line. Fans can look forward to the release of the first of four short Krypto films scheduled for September 2025, with a promise of a “fun and goofy” vibe from Gunn.

As one enthusiastic fan remarked on Reddit, “Honestly, I kind of love how Gunn is reclaiming certain DC superheroes and their sidekicks for kids, especially Superman. Adult fans have often complicated the genre.” Another voiced agreement, suggesting that recognizing superheroes as family-friendly, particularly for characters like Superman, is a smart direction.

A third fan chimed in, “If there’s no Streaky and Ace in it, we riot. I loved the old Krypto the Super Dog show as a kid.” Krypto, who originally graced audiences through the animated series bearing his name, has also made appearances in Smallville, Titans, and the concluding episode of Superman & Lois.

The extent of Krypto’s role in Gunn’s movie remains uncertain, but early footage indicates a significant presence of CGI featuring Jolene.

In addition to Krypto, other animated projects under development include DC Super Powers, Starfire, and My Adventures with Green Lantern.
