Why Jean Smart Was Recast in “Another Simple Favor”

In “Another Simple Favor, ”Margaret is now played by Elizabeth Perkins, as Jean Smart could not return due to her commitment to the acclaimed series “Hacks.”Director Paul Feig explained, “Jean wanted to participate but her schedule was packed with both ‘Hacks’ and Broadway commitments. Unfortunately, we couldn’t align our schedules. Thankfully, I have collaborated with Elizabeth Perkins before, and she seamlessly stepped into the role.”Feig expressed pride in addressing the recast with a humorous line in the film.
The sequel introduces new dynamics during a wedding in Capri, where Emily’s new mother-in-law, Portia, invites Margaret and Aunt Linda, played by Alison Janney, both of whom we haven’t previously met. Their arrival stirs tension, and when Emily encounters them, she comments on her mother’s changed appearance. Margaret’s witty response, “I had some work done, ” addresses the recast with a light note, ensuring the transition feels smooth for the audience.
As for “Hacks, ”Season 4 premiered with stellar acclaim, boasting a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes right out of the gate, and currently holding a 97% score. Jean Smart’s performance as Deborah Vance has earned her consecutive Critics’ Choice Television Awards for Best Actress in a Comedy Series in 2022, 2023, and again in 2025.
While Smart’s commitment to “Hacks”might have sidelined her role in “Another Simple Favor, ”she hints at the potential conclusion of her successful series. In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar, she noted, “The show was sold on a five-year story arc, which is the plan they’ve maintained. While I wouldn’t rule anything out, that timeline feels appropriate, as it’s important to conclude on a high note without overstaying our welcome.”
