Joe Pantoliano has made an intriguing revelation regarding his character’s fate in The Matrix. The actor disclosed that the Wachowski siblings misled him about Cypher’s demise, and he remains optimistic about the possibility of his character’s return.

Pantoliano first forged a friendship with the Wachowskis during his role in their debut feature, Bound. This collaboration led to his casting as Cypher—a member of the resistance who ultimately betrays his comrades in the iconic science fiction film.

In a shocking turn of events, Cypher engages in the betrayal of several fellow rebels before being fatally shot by Tank. Interestingly, during production, Pantoliano sought to alter this narrative.

At a recent panel at New York Comic-Con, Pantoliano recounted how he had previously convinced director Andrew Davis to spare his character in The Fugitive, allowing him to appear in the sequel, US Marshals. He attempted a similar strategy when speaking with Lily Wachowski about Cypher’s fate.

“I said, ‘Hey, you can’t kill me, right? You’re not gonna kill me?’” he recounted, explaining the exchange. According to Pantoliano, Lily laughed and relayed his doubts to Lana, who nonchalantly quipped, ‘Well, just lie to him and we’ll kill him anyway.’”

The panel’s host pointed out that the audience never actually witnesses Cypher’s lifeless body, raising questions about his true fate. Coincidentally, he was shot by the same lightning rifle that previously failed to kill Tank, adding another layer of intrigue.

“Don’t get me started, all right?” Pantoliano humorously commented on the speculation regarding a potential return for Cypher.“They brought f*cking Agent Smith back. It’s The Matrix!” he exclaimed, highlighting the franchise’s tendency for unexpected comebacks.

Currently, Drew Goddard is working on the development of The Matrix 5, and Pantoliano remains hopeful about a revival.“It’s not too late. It’s never too late, ” he affirmed.
