With major film franchises such as The Hunger Games, Twilight, and John Wick at their disposal, Lionsgate is gearing up for significant innovations by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into their film production processes. However, the studio is already facing criticism over these ambitious plans.
As we approach mid-2025, excitement builds for the release of Ballerina, a John Wick spinoff featuring a special appearance by Keanu Reeves. This film represents just one of the many projects Lionsgate has in the pipeline, showcasing their influential role in cinematography over recent years.
Along with The Strangers – Chapter 2, Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, and Sunrise on the Reaping, Lionsgate is not only focused on future releases but also on reimagining existing films for broader audiences.
Lionsgate’s Vision: Transforming Films through AI
In a recent conversation with Vulture, Lionsgate’s vice-chairman, Michael Burns, articulated the studio’s exploration of AI technology to transform older films into versions that are “more kid-friendly or animated”.

Burns stated, “We’re banging around the art of the possible. Let’s try some stuff, see what sticks… Now we can say, ‘Do it in anime, make it PG-13.’ Three hours later, I’ll have the movie.” This showcases a bold approach to utilizing AI and specifically mentions the use of a software called Runway to repackage their existing intellectual properties.
For example, Burns suggested the idea of transforming a well-known action franchise into a kid-friendly format. This could involve changing the tone, altering the film’s rating, or even converting a live-action feature into an animated style. Actors and rights holders would still receive compensation for these adaptations, allowing for the films to be resold in a new light.
While no final decisions have been made regarding specific projects, Burns noted the potential to significantly reduce the cost of production: “There’s a ten-second shot, 10, 000 soldiers on a hillside with a bunch of horses in a snowstorm, ” he mentioned, referring to Runway’s capabilities to turn a million-dollar scene into one costing around $10, 000.
Despite these ambitious plans, public reception has been overwhelmingly negative. Fans voiced their concerns on social media, with one user reflecting, “Imagine being a director, pouring your heart and soul into a movie, and then someone turns it into Baby Shark for their kid. The future is now.” Another user encapsulated the feelings of many by commenting, “Might be one of the worst things I’ve ever read, ” while a third exclaimed, “Hate this crap; it’s so freaking bleak.”
In light of these developments, it’s important to note that other studios may also be cautiously incorporating AI into their production processes as they navigate the post-strike landscape concerning unions such as SAG-AFTRA and WGA.
