Latest News: Popular Ad Blocker Evades Google’s Disruption Attempts

Despite its immense popularity, uBlock Origin, the ad blocker, will soon become incompatible with Google Chrome. Nevertheless, the extension’s developer has found a workaround that will allow users to bypass this limitation until June of next year.

It is inevitable that uBlock Origin will be removed from Google Chrome, but you can delay its removal until next year. The extension will no longer be supported on Chrome or other Chromium browsers due to its use of the older Manifest V2 framework.

At present, the search engine giant solely displays a cautionary banner on the Chrome Web Store page for uBlock Origin, stating that the extension may no longer be supported as it does not adhere to the recommended guidelines for Chrome extensions.

The company has announced that it will gradually disable V2 extensions for Chrome stable users over the next few months. Google’s goal is to complete the transition by the start of next year.

Nevertheless, businesses will have a grace period until June 2025 to transition from the V2 framework. During a conversation, Raymond Hill, the creator of uBlock Origin, revealed a method that could enable you to take advantage of this extension.

In order to enable “ExtensionManifestV2Availability”on your browser, simply follow Hill’s detailed instructions on GitHub, which are available for both Windows and Mac users in this discussion thread.

Once the uBlock Origin is successfully phased out by Google, you will have the choice to either switch to uBlock Origin Lite, which utilizes the newer V3 framework, or search for another V3 extension.

Hill is currently uncertain whether they will update the current extension to the V3 manifest or require users to switch to uBlock Origin Lite.

In response to a user’s question on GitHub, Hill stated that he has not yet determined the best course of action and is uncertain about what is possible. He also expressed concern that forcing uBO Lite on users could potentially erase any customizations they have made to uBO, as the two versions are significantly different and may not allow for a seamless transition.

In recent years, ad blockers have faced challenges, particularly when it comes to blocking YouTube ads. The platform has implemented measures to combat ad blockers, such as skipping videos or displaying a blank screen, by utilizing server-side ads.
