Linus Sebastian, the creator behind Linus Tech Tips, recently commended a new feature introduced by YouTube that empowers parents with enhanced control over their children’s viewing experiences. This innovative parental control option enables families to block or restrict access to YouTube Shorts, marking a substantial advancement in managing screen time effectively.

Enhanced Parental Controls for YouTube Shorts

During a recent episode of the WAN Show, Sebastian expressed his enthusiasm about YouTube’s improved safety features. He noted that parents can now exercise detailed control over the short-form video segment of the platform without needing to restrict access to the entire application.“I think the biggest one for me was actually the parental controls, ” he remarked.“I can now have the granularity to turn off shorts or limit shorts directly for my dependents, which is huge. Thank you, because I don’t mind my kids using YouTube at all. I do mind them doom scrolling shorts, ” he added.

He highlighted the unique challenges posed by Shorts, stating, “Shorts are a different thing. It’s a different beast entirely.” This distinction raises important questions about how short-form video content might impact young viewers in particular.

Comparisons to Past Media Concerns

In his discussion, Sebastian drew parallels between contemporary anxieties surrounding short-form media and historical panics regarding new forms of entertainment.“I feel a little bit as every generation goes through this. Books were once considered the devil, followed by concerns about radio, television, and video games, ” he explained. He reflected on his own upbringing, noting, “I grew up with YouTube and I turned out okay. Uh, but these shorts, these shorts are bad. They’ll rot your brain.”
