MTG Assassin’s Creed’s most-wanted Commander gets 500% price spike

Edward Kenway remains the most sought-after character in MTG’s Assassin’s Creed set, as players eagerly try to obtain this formidable pirate whose price has significantly increased.

Universes Beyond: Assassin’s Creed features a multitude of impressive and unforgettable Assassins from Ubisoft’s renowned franchise. With characters like Altaïr and Valhalla’s formidable Viking Eivor, players of both MTG and Assassin’s Creed have a plethora of exceptional cards to enhance their collections.

Despite the rest of the Assassin pack, one stands out as Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag’s Edward Kenway is rapidly increasing in value.

Starting at approximately $6, the Universes Beyond: Assassin’s Creed set’s Edward Kenway has quickly risen in value to an average price of $34 on TCGplayer. The borderless showcase variant is commanding an even higher price, with an average of $46.11.

MTG Assassin's Creed Edward Kenway Pirate

Despite the failure of titles like Skull and Bones to capture the same magic as the pirate adventure game Black Flag, it remains one of the most beloved and popular games in the series. This has led to a significant increase in the price of Edward Kenway, the protagonist of the game.

Despite The Lost Caverns of Ixalan featuring a pre-con dedicated to the theme, it’s widely acknowledged that pirates are not as strong or defined as other iconic Creature types in Magic: The Gathering.

In the past, pirate decks were constructed using a mix of different themes, but Edward Kenway simplifies the deckbuilding process by concentrating on two impactful and fitting abilities: acquiring Treasure and taking cards from opponents.

The MTG mechanic of Treasure is highly influential and versatile, as seen with Commanders such as Prosper, Tome-Bound, and Vihaan, Goldwaker of Outlaws of Thunder Junction, who excel at amassing a substantial hoard.

Acquiring Treasure can give you a significant advantage over your opponents in terms of mana production. This is especially true for items like The Reaver Cleaver and creatures like Ancient Red Dragon, which are highly sought after and command a high price thanks to their ability to generate Treasure.

Despite its usefulness in other Pirate decks, Edward Kenway truly stands out as one of the top Treasure cards in Grixis colors. This Commander is not only consistently castable, but also boasts the ability to generate a significant number of Treasure tokens, making it a valuable payoff for aggressive attacks.

This Commander simultaneously supports three potential themes: Pirates, Vehicles, and Assassins. The addition of Assassins from Universes Beyond: Assassin’s Creed, such as Adéwalé, a member of Edward’s crew and the Brotherhood, brings even more powerful cards for Edward to utilize.

Although Edward is rapidly rising through the ranks, he is still not as popular as Assassin’s Creed’s most widely known protagonist, Ezio Auditore. According to sources like EDHrec, Ezio has nearly twice the number of constructed decks compared to Edward.

Despite this, one key aspect to consider is that the Ezio Auditore da Firenze card was unveiled well before Edward’s, giving players a considerable advantage in creating decklists utilizing both Ezio and MTG’s current Assassin Creatures.

Although Ezio’s use of Ramses, Master Assassin in his final combo initially gained the card some popularity, it appears that Edward is swiftly challenging for the throne.

Fans of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag and MTG players seeking to add a little more flavor to their Pirate decks should pay attention to Edward Kenway in the future.
