The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition is set to undergo a significant transformation, and it’s happening sooner than many anticipated.

Nearly five years have passed since the launch of the PlayStation 5. During this time, Sony’s leading gaming console has faced numerous challenges including supply shortages, impressive sales achievements, and a price increase in the US market. Now, fresh reports indicate an impending shift focused specifically on the Digital Edition of the console.

According to notable leaker Billbil-Kun, Sony is preparing to introduce a revamped version of the PS5 Digital Edition this month—this variant omits the disc drive. However, this revision reportedly includes a reduction in storage capacity rather than an upgrade.

Reduction in Storage Capacity for the PS5 Digital Edition

As per the insights from Billbil-Kun, the updated console will feature a diminished storage capacity of 825 GB SSD, a decrease from the current model’s 1 TB SSD.

Billbil-Kun noted, “the storage space of the new PS5 Slim Digital Chassis E would be reduced to 825 GB, compared to 1 TB for the previous model (Chassis D).” Notably, despite the reduced storage, this model is expected to maintain its price point, suggesting that this move is Sony’s strategy to evade a potential third price hike for the PS5 Digital Edition in Europe.

The current price is projected to remain at €499, which marks a €100 increase from its original launch price in 2020.

At this point, the revised Digital Edition will be exclusive to the European market, with no official word on whether Sony will launch this lower-storage variant in the US or other regions. However, industry speculation suggests that the console could officially release in Europe on September 13, 2025.
