Seth Rogen has hinted at the possibility of Pineapple Express 2, suggesting a “never say never”attitude. However, fans shouldn’t get their hopes up too high about this sequel becoming a reality. Much like how Home Alone symbolizes Christmas, Pineapple Express has become synonymous with 4/20 celebrations.
This cult classic showcases stoner humor at its peak, and since its release, there have been frequent discussions surrounding a possible sequel. Recently, during his appearance on the Watch What Happens Live podcast, Rogen addressed a fan’s inquiry regarding Pineapple Express 2.
“Maybe. We could probably sell it to streaming or something, ” Rogen responded. When host Andy Cohen emphasized the significant demand for a sequel, Rogen elaborated, “There could be. You never know. I don’t know. I’m not great with sequels. It’s not where my mind goes, but maybe one day.”
Challenges of Bringing Pineapple Express 2 to Life
One major obstacle to a potential sequel stems from Rogen’s complicated relationship with James Franco. Franco portrayed Saul, the laid-back weed dealer, and their dynamic was crucial to the film’s charm. However, the fallout from multiple sexual misconduct allegations against Franco in 2018 significantly altered their collaboration.
In 2021, Charlyne Yi, who starred alongside Franco in a Rogen-produced film, accused Franco of being a “sexual predator” and called out Rogen for being an “enabler.” Rogen responded to this criticism in an interview with The Sunday Times, stating, “I despise abuse and harassment. I would never cover up or conceal the actions of someone who engages in such behavior.”
He acknowledged past comments about his willingness to continue working with Franco, admitting, “I have not and I do not plan to right now.” Reflecting on their relationship, Rogen expressed the emotional difficulty of their friendship’s deterioration but recognized the far-reaching impact of Franco’s actions on others.

Franco himself confirmed the estrangement during a conversation with Variety, stating, “I haven’t talked to Seth. I love Seth; we had 20 great years together, but I guess it’s over. And not for lack of trying. I’ve told him how much he’s meant to me.”
Prior to their fallout, Rogen had proposed a sequel to Pineapple Express to Sony, but the studio rejected it due to financial constraints. Even if a streaming giant like Disney or Netflix were to express interest now, the film would likely feel distinctly different without the original duo leading the charge.
