Overwatch 2 is gearing up for its highly anticipated Season 17, which promises an exciting array of new features including game modes and maps. The momentum from recent updates has set a high bar for this upcoming season.

In recent releases, Blizzard has introduced significant changes to the game. Notably, Season 15 saw the debut of the groundbreaking Perks system, while Season 16 introduced hero bans and the increasingly popular Stadium mode, which has quickly garnered a loyal fan base. With another content-packed season on the horizon, community excitement is palpable.

Kickoff Date for Season 17

Season 17 is set to launch on Tuesday, June 24, 2025. This date aligns with the in-game Battle Pass countdown, confirming that new seasons typically commence immediately following the conclusion of the previous one. Unless unforeseen delays occur, mark your calendars!

Introducing Map Voting

One of the most significant enhancements in Season 17 is the introduction of map voting, allowing players to have a say in their match environments.

This new feature will present players with three map options during the lobby, enabling everyone to vote for their preferred location. The map receiving the highest number of votes will be selected, following a model familiar to players of titles like Call of Duty.

To keep gameplay fresh, two of the selected maps will be the least frequently played by the players in that lobby, while the third map will be chosen randomly.

Payload Race Mode: A Fresh Twist

Following its introduction in Season 16, the Stadium mode will expand to include an exclusive new game mode known as Payload Race.

In this mode, each team will aim to push their respective payloads to the finish line while simultaneously trying to prevent the opposing team from doing the same. This dynamic format will require teams to strategically divide their forces, with part of the team focused on advancing their payload and another group dedicated to interfering with their rivals.

Senior Game Designer Dylan Snyder elaborated on this mode, stating:

This engaging gameplay will stir up pivotal mid-match decisions regarding whether to maintain focus on their own objectives or shift attention to hindering the enemy team.

A New/Additions to the Flashpoint Maps

Flashpoint maps have remained limited since their debut in Season 6, but Season 17 will finally welcome a third map to its lineup. This announcement comes from Game Director Aaron Keller, who hinted at new developments:

While the specifics regarding the map’s identity or design remain undisclosed, it is speculated to be named Aatlis based on a recent OW2 Spotlight roadmap. Additional updates regarding this new location and improvements to existing maps are expected soon.

No New Hero This Season

Players hoping for a new hero in Season 17 will be disappointed to learn that no new characters will be introduced this time. Hero releases typically follow a bi-season pattern, and since Freja made her debut in Season 16, passengers will need to be patient.

However, the anticipation builds as a new Support hero named Aqua is set to appear in Season 18. Players will get a chance to try Aqua in Quick Play mode during a limited trial at the end of Season 17, allowing for community feedback and potential adjustments before her official release.

Additional Updates to Look Forward To

  • Adjustments to hero balance through buffs and nerfs
  • A new D. Va Mythic skin
  • A new Reaper Mythic weapon
  • A distinct new seasonal theme
  • An updated Battle Pass
  • Exciting new events

As the release date approaches, the Overwatch community can expect an engaging mix of content that promises to refresh their gameplay experience.
