Robert Downey Jr.recently shared an intriguing photo from the set of Avengers: Doomsday, sparking concerns among fans regarding the appearance of his character, Doctor Doom. This casting surprise came during the July 2024 San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) when Downey revealed he would be stepping back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as the iconic villain, five years after his dramatic exit in Endgame.
Filming for Doomsday is currently in progress, and it marks the beginning of an exciting two-part blockbuster series that will be capped off by the anticipated Secret Wars.
Concerns Rise Over Doctor Doom’s Mask Design
Details about Doctor Doom’s entry into the MCU remain scarce. Fans are left wondering about his origins—will he emerge from Latveria, why does he resemble Tony Stark, or is he a variant from a different universe? A more pressing question has arisen regarding the design of Doctor Doom’s mask, especially after Downey’s latest social media post.
The image features motion capture dots on Downey’s face, which are typically used by VFX teams to accurately track actors’ movements for CGI applications. This raises speculation that these dots may pertain to the design of Victor Von Doom’s iconic mask.

As CGI technology continues to evolve within the MCU, the use of digitally created masks has become increasingly prevalent. Examples include Sam Wilson’s helmet in Brave New World and the advanced suits employed in Endgame. Given that Stark pioneered nano-technology, it seems plausible that Doctor Doom’s mask and suit might incorporate similar features.
Fans have taken to social media to express their mixed feelings about this potential direction for the character. One user commented, “They are gonna CGI the f**king mask, ” while another expressed confusion about the implementation of such technology along with a muscle suit: “Muscle suit, grey hair, and minimal mo-cap dots on his face? Now I’m even more confused what direction they’re going with for Doom.”
Additionally, another fan expressed skepticism, stating, “It’s a completely out of context shot, but the tracker dots on his face makes me think Doom’s gonna have the f**king nanotech helmet every other MCU character has.” This indicates a growing apprehension about the character’s traditional visuals possibly being altered for more modern CGI techniques.
In light of all these speculations, it remains unclear what approach the Russo Brothers will take in the character’s design and development. While discussing Downey’s dedication to the role, they noted to ET, “It’s a very intense process developing the character. He’s so immersed in it. He is so dialed in… that’s the kind of artist he is. That’s the kind of actor he is.”
