A Pennsylvania man is currently recovering from an unexpected accident involving one of his dogs, which allegedly discharged a shotgun, injuring him in the back.
This unusual incident took place late on the night of November 11 in Shillington, capturing widespread media attention as police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the gun’s discharge.
According to law enforcement reports, the 53-year-old victim was in the process of cleaning his shotgun before placing it on his bed. Moments later, the firearm unexpectedly fired. Witness accounts indicate that a dog jumped onto the bed just before the gun went off. At the time of the incident, the man’s son was present and quickly called emergency services. First responders arrived to find the man conscious on the floor and subsequently transported him to Reading Hospital where he underwent surgery.
As reported by People, the shooting event occurred shortly after 11 p.m.in the 300 block of State Street. While the man has not been named publicly, police have not yet released any updates regarding his condition. It is known that several dogs were in the residence during the incident.

Accidental Shooting by Family Pet
Authorities are actively investigating the events that led to the accidental discharge. Shillington Police Sergeant James Schoone commented, “We are unsure whether the dog’s paw inadvertently activated the trigger when the safety was off, or if there was a malfunction in the firearm.”
Schoone emphasized the importance of responsible firearm handling, stating, “Every weapon should always be treated as if it is loaded. Following cardinal rules—keeping firearms pointed in a safe direction and keeping fingers away from triggers—is essential. This situation represents a perfect storm of unfortunate events; it was the wrong time and place.”
While some pets may trigger unfortunate accidents, not all interact poorly with firearms. In a striking contrast, earlier this year, a dog in Peru received recognition for her bravery after successfully preventing a stick of dynamite from detonating near her family’s home.
