Felix “PewDiePie” Kjellberg, the iconic YouTube influencer, had the extraordinary opportunity to collaborate with the talented animators from WIT Studio, the renowned anime production house known for its work on classics like Attack on Titan and Spy x Family.
In a remarkable display of dedication, PewDiePie gained significant attention in 2024 after documenting his self-taught drawing journey over a span of 100 days. His rapid advancement in artistic skills captivated fans and ultimately led to an invitation from one of Japan’s premier animation studios.
For those well-versed in anime, WIT Studio needs little introduction. They crafted the first three seasons of Attack on Titan, before handing it over to MAPPA in 2020, and have also produced notable series such as Ranking of Kings, Vinland Saga, and The Ancient Magus Bride.
Notably, WIT Studio is celebrated for its exceptional animation style and meticulous attention to detail, elements that PewDiePie experienced firsthand while visiting their Tokyo facility. The studio extended a unique invitation to him, allowing him to tour the premises and engage directly with their skilled artists.
Initially intimidated by the prospect, PewDiePie considered withdrawing but ultimately embraced the challenge, diving deep into the artistic realm of professional animation.
Drawing with the Masters: PewDiePie’s Experience at WIT Studio
During his visit, PewDiePie participated in a warm-up sketch exercise with the seasoned animators. This involved quick drawing sessions where they sketched each other within time limits ranging from 30 seconds to three minutes. Moreover, PewDiePie even posed for a drawing session, drawing comparisons between his own sketches and those of WIT’s experts, who provided him with valuable critiques on size and technique.
He also had the thrilling opportunity to animate a short scene featuring a character leaping off a box and contribute to the in-between frames for a key battle sequence featuring Levi from Attack on Titan. The finesse required to produce these in-betweens, which are essential for ensuring smooth motion, was something PewDiePie found exceedingly challenging.
Reflecting on his endeavors, PewDiePie remarked, “This is a lot harder than it looks. But it was really cool to see the images in their raw form and how insanely good they look.” He further expressed newfound admiration for the animated medium, stating, “I was already impressed by how much work goes into making an anime, but trying it myself made me really understand it. I’m way more impressed now.”
As a memento of his experience, the animators gifted him some exclusive Attack on Titan merchandise, along with a custom illustration depicting him as a member of the Scouting Regiment, illustrated in the WIT style.
This insightful encounter underscores the complexities and artistic challenges inherent in anime production, shedding light on why certain series may falter when under tight deadlines—think of shows like One Punch Man. PewDiePie’s experience serves as a reminder of the dedication and skill that animators apply to bring stories to life.
