On June 5th, it was reported by Yonhap News that a female police officer, identified as A, from the Chungnam Police Station had accessed and stolen the personal information of a well-known trot singer through the internal network. The officer, who was in her 30s, illegally obtained the address of the singer’s home and paid a visit.
Despite A not causing any harm, the trot singer still reported A’s actions to the police. The identity of the singer remains undisclosed, however, the Chungnam Police Station has terminated A’s employment and is currently investigating further consequences for her actions. According to the Personal Information Protection Act, A could potentially face a prison sentence of 5 years or a fine of 50 million won.
Several instances have occurred in which personal information belonging to celebrities was unlawfully obtained. A staff member of the Korea Railroad Corporation gained unauthorized access to BTS RM’s personal information and shared it with associates in order for them to purchase tickets next to the popular male idol. Sasaeng fans also managed to discover BTS Jungkook’s residential address and sent food deliveries to his home.
The leakage of phone numbers is a widespread issue that all celebrities are currently encountering.
