Grand Theft Auto 6 is gearing up to make history as the first title categorized as a ‘AAAAA’ release, as proclaimed by a rival game publisher, igniting excitement among fans globally.

Initially, players anticipated that the end of 2025 would mark the conclusion of a prolonged decade-long wait for the next installment of the beloved franchise. The expectation was to usher in 2026 with the launch of GTA 6; however, Rockstar Games has announced a new release date of May 26, 2026, granting themselves additional time for development.

Though the postponement may be disappointing, the enthusiasm surrounding this highly awaited title remains undeterred. Fans are meticulously analyzing the two trailers and exploring countless screenshots for hints about what to expect in the upcoming mid-2026 launch.

This delay has stirred other developers and publishers to rethink their strategies as well. Many are now reconsidering their own release schedules to steer clear of the high-profile launch window that GTA 6 now occupies.

GTA 6: Poised to Redefine Game Releases as the First ‘AAAAA’ Title

Nigel Lowrie, co-founder of Digital Devolver, has stated that Grand Theft Auto 6 possesses the “scope” necessary to be recognized as the gaming industry’s first AAAAA title. He elaborated, saying, “There are AAA games, then there are AAAA games, and I’d argue that Grand Theft Auto is potentially the AAAAA game. It surpasses anything else in both scope and scale, along with the cultural impact it generates and the attention it commands, ” during his conversation with IGN.

The term ‘AAA’ was first employed in the gaming industry during the 1990s to signify blockbuster titles. Numerous franchises including Call of Duty, Fallout, Final Fantasy, Halo, and the iconic Grand Theft Auto are recognized as exemplary AAA games.

Ubisoft has previously proclaimed projects like Beyond Good and Evil 2 and Skull and Bones as AAAA titles; however, the ‘AAAA’ designation has yet to be widely adopted by other developers.
