Paramount Pictures is actively developing the highly anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog 4, and recent speculation regarding its title suggests that two fan-favorite characters from the franchise may take center stage alongside the iconic blue hedgehog.
Since the controversial first trailer was released in 2019, which faced significant backlash prompting a complete redesign of Sonic, the franchise has seen remarkable success, grossing over $1 billion at the global box office. This pivot proved to be a wise decision, allowing Sonic to resonate more with his video game fans and audiences alike.
The film series has successfully introduced several beloved characters, such as Miles “Tails” Prower, voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey, and Knuckles the Echidna, portrayed by Idris Elba, in the second installment. Moreover, the eagerly awaited Sonic the Hedgehog 3 features the return of Shadow the Hedgehog, whose character is voiced by Keanu Reeves.
Potential Title Change from Sonic 4 to Sonic CD

According to reputable insider Daniel Richtman, there is discussion within Paramount about renaming the fourth film to Sonic CD. This title harkens back to the classic 1993 video game, which was pivotal in introducing Amy Rose and Metal Sonic to the franchise. Given their recent cameo in the post-credits scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, this renaming would be a seamless narrative transition.
In this scene, a battalion of Metal Sonics confronts Sonic in a forest, with Amy Rose ultimately intervening to save him. Director Jeff Fowler has also expressed a desire to include Sonic CD elements, as he noted during the promotion of Sonic 3’s home release: “We’re all dying to get a female character in the mix with Amy, but at the same time, to honor how they were both introduced in Sonic CD, ” he shared with Polygon.

Transitioning from Sonic 4 to Sonic CD could elevate the chaos—both literally and figuratively—if the film draws on the original game’s story. In this plotline, Dr. Robotnik attempts to transform a moon into a massive base using time stones, incorporating elements like time travel to explore alternate, darker timelines in which Robotnik emerges victorious. Fans are already buzzing with anticipation about this potential storyline’s cinematic realization.
On X, the response among fans has been overwhelmingly positive. Discussions have included the possibility of introducing Silver the Hedgehog, a time-traveling hero from the future. One excited fan shared their curiosity about the direction of the plot, while another chimed in with enthusiasm, stating, “I’m all here for it, ” and a third simply exclaimed, “OMG METAL SONIC YES.”
