The Legacy of SISTAR: Celebrating “Shake It” After a Decade
It has now been ten years since SISTAR, the reigning “Summer Queens”of K-pop, made waves with their timeless hit, “Shake It”. Although the group officially disbanded in 2017 after a successful seven-year journey, their 2015 anthem continues to resonate as one of the most iconic summer songs in the K-pop genre.
The Launch of a Summer Anthem
On June 22, 2015, SISTAR unveiled their third EP featuring the title track, “Shake It”. Crafted by the renowned production duo Duble Sidekick, this vibrant track merges retro influences with a modern twist, characterized by its engaging brass sections and funky undertones. The result was a catchy dance tune that captured the attention of audiences across South Korea.
SISTAR’s Impact During Summer Seasons
Comprising Hyolyn, Bora, Soyou, and Dasom, SISTAR consistently showcased powerful vocals and dynamic performances that epitomized summer energy. Their stage presence, combined with a refreshing musical style, earned them accolades and admiration throughout their career.
Building on their previous success with the breezy hit “Touch My Body” in 2014, the group returned the following year with “Shake It”, which amplified their signature summer vibes. The song’s infectious rhythm and approachable choreography made it a favorite for festivals, school events, and even viral dance challenges.

Chart-Topping Success
The popularity of “Shake It” translated into remarkable achievements on music charts. In July 2015, the track secured the No.1 position on Mnet’s “M! Countdown” (July 2) and SBS’s “Inkigayo” (July 5), outperforming tough contenders like BIGBANG’s “Bang Bang Bang” and AOA’s “Heart Attack”. Additionally, the song dominated Melon’s weekly chart during the fourth week of June (22nd–28th), solidifying its place as a summer blockbuster.
A Bittersweet Farewell
Despite their soaring popularity, SISTAR opted to disband in May 2017, a decision that came as a surprise to many. Leaving while still at the height of their fame was a poignant choice, garnering respect and admiration from fans and critics alike. Since parting ways, the members have embarked on individual careers, exploring new horizons as singers and actresses.
Reflections on Change
However, the transition to solo careers was not without challenges. In an emotional revelation during the SBS documentary series “Bodymentary”, member Soyou expressed thoughts of retirement following the group’s breakup, admitting, “I actually thought I would retire when SISTAR disbanded, ” and further sharing, “I was scared of being alone.”
As we celebrate a decade of “Shake It”, it’s clear that SISTAR’s influential legacy in the K-pop scene continues to flourish, leaving a lasting impression on fans and the industry alike.
