A recent study has indicated that engaging in the popular game League of Legends may enhance cognitive functions, with some benefits persisting for up to ten weeks after ceasing play.
Conducted by researchers at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, this extensive 30-week research compared League of Legends with the strategy-based card game, Legends of the Three Kingdoms.
Cognitive Boost from League of Legends
The study involved a diverse group of 68 young adult participants with minimal prior exposure to gaming. Participants were divided into two groups: one dedicated one hour daily, five days a week to League of Legends, while the other group invested the same amount of time into Legends of the Three Kingdoms.
Throughout the study, the researchers evaluated participants at various points, assessing spatial attention, working memory, and executive function through a series of cognitive tasks. Additionally, they measured resting brain activity to detect any significant changes.
The findings revealed that while both gaming groups exhibited improvements in cognitive tasks, the League of Legends players demonstrated notably superior advancements in spatial attention as well as working memory. Moreover, shifts in brainwave patterns were more pronounced among League of Legends players, suggesting enhanced efficiency in information processing.
Intriguingly, the cognitive benefits identified were still apparent during a follow-up assessment conducted ten weeks later. This finding has led some to ponder whether mastering characters like Lee Sin or engaging in light-hearted trolling with Teemo might yield tangible, real-life cognitive improvements.

The authors of the study suggested that different genres of games may stimulate various neural pathways. While strategy games like Legends of the Three Kingdoms also provided cognitive benefits, action-oriented games like League of Legends appeared to generate stronger and more enduring positive effects.
However, it is crucial to recognize that the study primarily focused on young, healthy college students and did not thoroughly account for external influences such as motivation, academic pressures, or casual gaming outside the study parameters.
Thus, while the research hints that engaging with League of Legends could enhance cognitive functions like attention and memory, it does not conclusively establish that simply playing this game will result in increased intelligence for everyone. Nonetheless, those extended late-night gaming sessions might contribute more positively to cognitive abilities than merely elevating stress levels!
