Josef Fares, the director of the acclaimed game Split Fiction, recently provided an exciting update regarding the movie adaptation that will feature the talented Sydney Sweeney. The announcement comes on the heels of the game’s impressive reception, which saw it sell over four million copies since its release in 2025.
At its core, Split Fiction tells the intriguing tale of two authors: Zoe, a fantasy writer, and Mio, a science fiction scribe. In the game, they engage in a fascinating simulation that immerses them within their fictional creations, allowing players to navigate diverse and imaginative worlds.
Movie Adaptation Progress

Just two weeks post-release, the film adaptation was officially announced, with Amazon MGM Studios securing the production rights after a fierce bidding contest. Jon M. Chu, known for Wicked, will be directing this exciting project, and Sydney Sweeney has been cast in a leading role.
Tasked with translating the game’s narrative into a compelling screenplay are the talented writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, recognized for their work on the Zombieland and Deadpool franchises. Josef Fares has disclosed that the initial draft of the screenplay has now been finalized.
During his remarks at the recent Guldbagge Awards, Fares shared insights about the script, stating, “I got the first version of the script today but you know, there’s so much talk in Hollywood. I usually say it like this, ‘I believe it when I see it.’” It hints at both the excitement and uncertainty that often accompanies Hollywood adaptations.

Fares also mentioned his positive interactions with Sweeney, describing her as “super chill” and expressing that she is quite enthusiastic about the film. However, with numerous productions in her pipeline, including a highly anticipated Gundam movie, the timeline for production will likely hinge on her availability.
