The Most Terrifying Monster in Alien: Romulus Was Not CGI

The movie returns to the gritty and familiar world of the original, while also incorporating a clever nod to the original by featuring one of its Xenomorphs in the cast.

Caution: The following contains spoilers for Alien: Romulus.

The Human-Xenomorph mutant is known for its gruesome appearance. However, it is also a highly functional creation, brought to life by casting an actor of inhuman height.

At the age of 24, Robert Bobroczkyi is a Romanian actor who gained attention for his role as a college basketball player. Standing at an imposing height of 7 feet and 7 inches, Bobroczkyi makes his acting debut in Romulus as the Newborn, created entirely through practical effects.

Fans who were already acquainted with Bobroczkyi could easily identify him despite the extensive use of prosthetics, creating a truly eerie appearance that also pays homage to the Xenomorphs’ legacy in the Alien franchise.

The 1979 Alien movie did not have the advantage of CGI. The role of the Xenomorph was played by 26-year-old Nigerian visual artist Bolaji Badejo, who wore a complex costume. Badejo, standing at 6’10”, set the standard for the character.

Badejo is widely recognized as the creator of many defining aspects of the Xenomorph’s character. His contributions to the movement and overall design were significant. His only acting credit is in Alien, as he had already returned to Nigeria before Aliens was released. Tragically, he passed away in 1992.

Bobroczkyi’s inclusion in the cast not only makes great use of his incredibly tall stature and intimidating presence, but it also pays homage to the original film, adding an enjoyable element to the movie. This decision has clearly paid off, as fans are responding positively to Alien: Romulus.
