Tom Holland recently opened up about his memorable performance of Rihanna’s “Umbrella”on Lip Sync Battle. During the discussion, he shared surprising insights, including his father’s initial disapproval of the performance, details about his eye-catching outfit, and how the experience continues to linger in his mind.

Since stepping into the shoes of Spider-Man, Holland has captured the hearts of fans with his charming portrayal of Peter Parker. Debuting in Captain America: Civil War, he brought a youthful enthusiasm that redefined the character. Following this success, Holland starred in a solo trilogy that enjoyed both critical praise and box office success. Currently, he is busy filming the fourth installment, Brand New Day, on the streets of Glasgow.

However, it was in 2017 that Holland overshadowed his superhero status with a show-stopping act on Lip Sync Battle. His performance started with a rendition of “Singin’ in the Rain, ”but it was his stunning lead-up to “Umbrella”that left the audience in awe, complete with fishnet stockings and a dramatic rain shower.

Behind the Scenes: Tom’s Gran’s Tights

In a candid conversation with chef Gordon Ramsay, Holland disclosed some intriguing background about his performance, revealing a striking detail about his attire. He mentioned that he originally agreed with Zendaya to keep their acts simple, saying: “We had agreed that we would take it easy… just nice and easy breezy.”

However, as he collaborated with the creative team, the concept evolved into something more ambitious: “When we were rehearsing, it got crazier and crazier… Then the rain machine came in. I was like, ‘F*ck it, I wanna wear fishnets…’”

When asked whether the tights belonged to his mother, Holland playfully corrected him: “They were my granny’s, actually.” He further revealed that these tights are now framed and displayed at the MET.

The Haunting Impact of the Performance

During the interview, Holland also reflected on his father’s reservations about the performance, expressing concern over how it might affect his burgeoning career: “When I told my dad, he was like, ‘Son, I don’t think that’s a good idea. I don’t think you should do that.’”

His father was worried about Holland becoming too recognized too fast, urging him to be cautious with his appearances on various TV platforms to protect his childhood. Nevertheless, Holland went ahead with the act, and it became a defining moment in his career.

Holland commented: “Of all the pieces of work that I’ve done, the Lip Sync Battle is the thing that everyone brings up… it haunts me!” Despite his mixed feelings, the performance has undeniably become a part of his legacy.
