AKMU to Conclude Contract with YG Entertainment by December 2025

In a recent announcement by YG Entertainment, it was confirmed that the renowned duo AKMU (Akdong Musician) will officially conclude their exclusive contract at the end of December 2025. Instead of transitioning to another major label, the pair is reportedly exploring the possibility of establishing their own independent company alongside their long-time manager from YG.

Discussions of Independence

A music industry insider revealed that several months ago, the members of AKMU shared a meal with YG’s Executive Producer, Yang Hyun Suk. The conversation veered towards AKMU’s future career trajectory. Yang, who has played a significant role in guiding their artistic development for over a decade, reportedly suggested that pursuing independence could be instrumental in fostering their creative growth outside the YG umbrella.

YG’s Heartfelt Farewell

On November 21, YG Entertainment publicly expressed its gratitude for the years spent together with AKMU, stating, “We sincerely support their new journey ahead.” The agency acknowledged its honor in nurturing the duo from their early days to their maturity as artists, thanking them for the beautiful music and emotions they contributed to the industry.

During their farewell meeting, AKMU presented a handwritten letter to Yang Hyun Suk and offered a deep bow, affirming their enduring connection by stating, “We are forever YG Family.” Both parties have emphasized their commitment to continue supporting one another, suggesting a lasting bond akin to an extended family.

With a string of hits including “How Can I Love the Heartbreak, You’re the One I Love, ” “NAKKA, ” “DINOSAUR, ” “200%, ” and “Last Goodbye, ” both Lee Chan Hyuk and Lee Su Hyun have successfully ventured into solo careers. Recently, they undertook a bold performance challenge by hosting a small theater concert series titled AKDONGDEUL at the Myunghwa Live Hall.

Looking Ahead

Back in 2021, AKMU made waves by renewing their contract with YG for an additional five years, following the expiration of their original seven-year agreement. Lee Chan Hyuk expressed his trust in YG, remarking that they had always supported the duo without imposing restrictions.

As AKMU prepares to turn the page on this chapter with YG Entertainment, fans and industry professionals alike are keenly watching for their next moves on this exciting new creative path.
