“Tricky” Pokemon Go Steel-type dominates Great League after secret buff

Despite being notoriously difficult to utilize in Pokemon Go Battle League, Gen 2’s Steelix has been transformed into a formidable PvP beast thanks to the recent updates in the Shared Skies Season.

Despite the minimal updates brought by the Shared Skies Season in Pokemon Go, the Go Battle League has still seen a significant shake-up in its meta due to some subtle buffs given to popular PvP choices.

An example of such a Pokemon is the well-known Steel/Ground-type Steelix, known for its strong defensive abilities and impressive moveset. Despite its vulnerabilities in the Great League, recent moveset nerfs have weakened some of its main opponents, leading to Steelix’s recent success in battles.

When Reddit user ‘bulbavisual’ posted about the change in the Great League meta caused by the popularity of certain Pokemon, it came as a surprise to many trainers that Steelix had risen to the top.

A fan noted that Steelix often struggles against water-type Pokemon, but would become stronger if these Pokemon were less common or weaker. They also pointed out that the recent nerf to Scald has negatively affected Lanturn and Whiscash, but this is no longer a concern for Steelix now that these two Pokemon are less commonly used.

Additionally, a player who had encountered this new challenge in the GBL remarked, “I encountered a Steelix during my placement matches and despite using counters, it was a tough battle. I was perplexed by how strong the Steelix was performing.”

Some added that Steelix has long been a formidable opponent in Pokemon Go PvP due to its limited counters and strong presence in the Ultra League.

They explained that even if you possess a weapon capable of dealing SE damage and resisting Dragon Tails, you will still be left vulnerable due to the de-buffing effects of a barrage of Psychic Fangs.

The Defense debuffs from Psychic Fangs and the occasional Attack debuff from Breaking Swipe were confirmed by numerous players. These moves had the ability to disrupt your opponent’s strategies, making them highly effective.

The most highly recommended GBL moveset for Steelix currently includes Dragon Tail, Psychic Fangs, and Crunch, and experienced PvP players confidently predict that it will gain widespread popularity during this Season.

To obtain Steelix in Pokemon Go, simply utilize a Metal Coat to evolve an Onix. Additionally, during Raids, you have the opportunity to Mega Evolve your Steelix and capitalize on its exceptional Defense statistic.
