NINA’s Challenging Debut in K-pop
This June, 19-year-old soloist NINA officially entered the K-pop scene under the banner of BNB Music, but her journey has been far from straightforward.
Previously known as Shen Jiarun to her Chinese fans, NINA experienced severe online bullying during her childhood, earning the unfortunate title of “the ugliest celeb kid.”Fast forward a decade, and she has emerged as a confident performer fluent in Chinese, Korean, and English. Despite her admirable transformation and ambitious entrance into the K-pop industry, her initial reception has garnered more sympathy than commercial success.

NINA released her debut album, titled “Never Afraid, ”along with the lead track “Freeze!”on June 19. While her agency highlighted her unique vocal abilities and confident stage presence, the actual performance in terms of sales and engagement has been disappointing. On release day, a mere single album was sold, and over a week later, total sales have yet to exceed 100 copies. Moreover, the music video for “Freeze!”has amassed only about 23, 000 views, which is exceptionally low for any K-pop debut, even by the standards of lesser-known artists.

A significant reason for NINA’s lackluster start can be traced back to the way her debut was launched.BNB Music reportedly formed solely to assist her entry into the industry, lacking the traditional K-pop training and pre-debut exposure that many artists undergo. Consequently, even the most dedicated K-pop fans were unaware of her presence. Interestingly, some speculate that the focus on her disappointing sales figures might unintentionally serve as effective promotional strategy for BNB Music.
From Bullying Victim to Aspiring K-pop Star
NINA’s pre-existing identity as Shen Jiarun carries significant emotional weight in her story. The daughter of Chinese entertainers Xiao Shenyang and Shen Chunyang, her appearance on the reality show The Firsts In Life in 2014 resulted in widespread criticism and ridicule, contributing to her nickname as “the ugliest celeb kid”among Chinese internet users. The backlash was so severe that her father later expressed deep regret over exposing her to fame at such a young age.

Despite the hostility she faced, young Shen Jiarun maintained her resilience, proudly asserting, “Everyone says I look just like my dad. I’m proud of that.” Her father was moved to tears by her response. Years later, the transformation she has undergone, both physically and emotionally, has astonished the public. However, in the competitive landscape of K-pop, beauty alone does not guarantee success. Currently, NINA’s future remains uncertain. Although her debut has not generated significant commercial traction, her journey of perseverance and growth has resonated deeply with many. Whether she can harness this emotional connection into sustained success remains to be seen, but for now, she stands as a powerful symbol of resilience.
