Ultimate Spider-Man confirms long-awaited original Spidey villain debuts in May

The Ultimate Spider-Man, a highly successful series by Marvel, is set to reach new heights as Doctor Octopus’ debut in the Ultimate universe has been officially confirmed.

The origin story of Ultimate Spider-Man has undergone significant changes, including Uncle Ben’s survival and Peter’s transformation into Spider-Man as an adult rather than a teenager. One notable change is the portrayal of Harry Osborn as a heroic Green Goblin.

Despite some positive aspects, Harry’s situation is not all perfect as some fear that he has just sealed his own fate. There are concerns that he may follow in the same destructive footsteps as his father, Norman.

The latest preview pages from Marvel reaffirm that it is Harry who introduces Otto Octavius, better known as Doctor Octopus, to the group in the upcoming issue #5 of Ultimate Spider-Man.

It was widely believed that Doctor Octopus would soon make his debut and be featured on the cover art of Ultimate Spider-Man #7. The recent pages have now confirmed Otto’s arrival and his connection to Harry, which could pave the way for him to become the first classic Spider-Man adversary that Peter encounters.

Throughout his superhero career as Spider-Man, Doctor Octopus has always held the title of being the first formidable superpowered adversary that Peter ever encountered. It served as a crucial reminder for Peter to not become complacent in his role as a crime-fighting hero, and to not simply rely on his physical strength to defeat petty criminals.

Notoriously, in 1999, Spider-Man: Chapter One attempted to merge Otto and Peter’s backstories by retconning them to have a shared origin. The retcon proposed that the explosion that caused Otto’s metal tentacles to fuse to his spine was also responsible for releasing the spider that bit Peter.

The first appearance of Doctor Octopus in the original Ultimate Spider-Man was in the second issue, where he was portrayed as a lab assistant under Norman Osborn. It was later revealed that the Ultimate version of Doctor Octopus possessed a unique ferrokinetic power, similar to that of Magneto, which enabled him to manipulate metal without the use of his iconic tentacles.

It is unclear how this new version of Doctor Octopus will acquire his signature tentacles, but they are prominently featured on the preview page.

On May 29, fans can pick up their copy of Ultimate Spider-Man #5, available at comic book stores. The next exciting release for Ultimate Spider-Man will be on May 4, with the highly anticipated Ultimate Universe Spider-Man #1, which will also be available as part of Free Comic Book Day.
