Many people in the Pokemon community believe that every Pocket Monster has at least one fan. Even the most obscure and weak Pokemon has someone advocating for it in online fan forums and Reddit discussions. Some, such as Bidoof and Magikarp, have even become popular memes.
Despite The Pokemon Company’s efforts to promote certain Pokemon to the community, some end up receiving criticism from players online, even though they may have initially been perceived as fan-favorites on paper.
During a recent fan debate, a Pokemon player requested the community’s input on creatures that they personally dislike but are popular among others. The responses were filled with passionate opinions and controversial takes on some of the most well-liked Pokemon and Generations.

In addition to popular choices such as Charizard and Incineroar, an unexpected number of players expressed Gengar as their least favorite Pokémon.
A player expressed, “It seemed to me that Game Freak made a conscious effort to heavily promote Gengar for some unknown motive,”alluding to its frequent appearance in titles such as Pokken and Unite before criticizing it as “just a bland creature with a smiling expression.”
Despite being beloved by the community, the Gen 1 Pokemon have received criticism from players who are not fans of the original line-up. One player expressed their dislike, stating, “I find the designs of popular Gen 1 Pokemon such as Charizard, Gengar, Gyarados, Mewtwo, and Nidoking to be either uninteresting or unpleasant.”
Despite appearing frequently in Pokemon games and anime episodes, Greninja seemed to be a major source of annoyance for many fans in the thread. One player even went as far as giving it the nickname “Midninja”, solidifying its status as a disliked creature.
Similarly, players in the thread heavily criticized Lucario, with one describing it as “unbelievably overrated”and another stating, “In my opinion, it is a dull and overrated concept that I have no interest in.”
As a long-time member of the Pokemon community, you are likely aware that opinions on the most overrated Pocket Monsters tend to shift with each new game release or anime season.
Pokemon Legends Z-A’s release will be an interesting opportunity to observe any changes in public perception towards beloved Pokemon. If the game includes new variations of starter Pokemon or Mega Evolutions for fan-favorites, there is a chance that the community’s sentiment could undergo a significant shift.
