Unintentional Nacho Libre Reference in Minecraft Movie

A new cinematic journey, A Minecraft Movie, helmed by director Jared Hess and featuring the talented Jack Black, hints at nostalgia reminiscent of their classic storytelling. Interestingly, one of the film’s crossover references was completely unintentional.

In this unique adventure, Jack Black takes on the role of Steve, an adult dedicated to exploring the depths of the mines, who finds himself ensnared in the perilous Nether. However, salvation comes in the form of a group of eccentric outcasts who discover an orb capable of reopening the portal. Their journey, however, is fraught with danger as they must confront and defeat the formidable Piglins.

For Black, securing victory involves not just showcasing his musical talent through surprise performances, but also engaging in combat. It’s worth noting that if you find yourself drawing parallels between Minecraft and another classic film, it might not have been by design.

Director Jared Hess expressed his admiration for Black’s physicality, stating, “Jack is at his best when he’s performing Lucha Libre wrestling moves. His physique looks fantastic, and it just comes so naturally to him. His fight style is inherently that of a wrestler.” He adds that when Black faces off against characters like zombies or even a chicken jockey, his performance shines.

Initially, Steve aids the group from a defensive position by battling off adversaries using a turret. As the adventure progresses, he confronts a full-blown Illager ring, utilizing his prowess to distract the enemies.

Producer Torfi Orlafsson acknowledges the importance of stunt coordination, mentioning that while Black has an experienced stuntman at his side, many of the action sequences are truly a testament to Black’s skill: “When Jack is in a one-take sequence fighting zombies, showcasing his karate kicks and executing impressive moves, it’s all him. He’s incredibly agile and physically adept.”

In jest, Hess remarked, “Jack Black ranks in my top five athletes of all time, ” highlighting the unexpected versatility of the actor.

Back in 2018, Jack Black expressed his desire to create a sequel to Nacho Libre. During an appearance on the Jonathan Ross Show, he stated, “I’ve always wanted to do another Nacho Libre, ” indicating his interest in revisiting this beloved character since the film’s release in 2006.

A Minecraft Movie is currently playing in theaters, capturing the imaginations of audiences worldwide.
