Viral Video: Waymo Self-Driving Car Stops Unexpectedly in Traffic

A recent viral TikTok video showcased a self-driving Waymo vehicle that stalled in the middle of an intersection, inadvertently blocking a trolley in San Francisco. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by autonomous vehicles in urban environments.

Waymo has been a prominent player in the realm of autonomous ride-hailing, initiating operations in San Francisco in 2022. The company took a significant step in August 2023 by launching fully driverless rides for the general public. However, this expansion has been marred by multiple reports of incidents involving stationary autonomous vehicles disrupting traffic flow, including blockages at critical intersections.

Incident Details: Waymo Vehicle Blocks Trolley

In the viral footage, captured by TikTok user @miajajah, the driverless car became immobilized on the trolley tracks, causing a trolley to become trapped behind it. Passengers in the vehicle had to contact Waymo’s rider support for assistance.

One frustrated passenger explained the situation, saying, “We are currently blocking a train, ” to which the support agent assured them the matter would be escalated. The agent elaborated that Waymo’s team could remotely suggest solutions to the stalled vehicle, although it still operated autonomously.

Amidst efforts from the support team to resolve the issue, the trolley operator exited the vehicle in a bid to gesticulate the autonomous car away from the tracks.

This TikTok clip has gained significant traction, registering over 5.4 million views since its upload in early November. Notably, this incident is not isolated; Waymo has faced increasing scrutiny on social media in recent weeks. On October 16, for instance, a 23-year-old software engineer created an unusual traffic jam in San Francisco with 50 of Waymo’s driverless taxis. Furthermore, a separate incident on October 29 alarmed many when a Waymo taxi reportedly ran a red light. Just two days later, Tekedra Mawakana, Waymo’s CEO, suggested that the public might eventually accept scenarios where driverless taxis could cause fatal accidents.

As the technology surrounding self-driving vehicles continues to advance, incidents such as these underscore the importance of stringent safety measures and effective operational protocols in ensuring the safe integration of autonomous vehicles into bustling urban landscapes.
