Weapons Director Explains Aunt Gladys’s Dark Spell Casting Secrets

<p>The horror film Weapons has emerged as one of the standout cinematic events of the year, and as it becomes available on various digital retail platforms, writer-director Zach Cregger shares insights into the creative process behind the character of Aunt Gladys and her chilling zombie ritual.

The Zombie Ritual of Aunt Gladys

Aunt Gladys employs voodoo to hypnotize her victims. Cregger revealed to Entertainment Weekly that his inspiration stemmed from the non-fiction book The Serpent and the Rainbow by Wade Davis, as well as the ritual featured in the Mekons’ song, Dancing in the Head.

To craft an original ritual for Aunt Gladys, Cregger devised a “unique, sinister recipe.” According to EW, the steps are as follows:

The ritual begins with Gladys filling a bowl with water.
She wraps a personal item belonging to her victim around a thorny branch from her enigmatic tree.
Coating this branch with her own blood enhances its potency.
When necessary, she uses a bell marked with the number six and a small inverted triangle to paralyze her target.
To invoke the spell, she snaps the twig in two and subsequently drops it into the water to complete the incantation.

Aunt Gladys’ Origins in Earlier Works

Zach Cregger also disclosed that the character of Aunt Gladys roots back to an earlier, unproduced script he had penned.

“Years ago, I had written a script centered around Gladys, ”Cregger shared.“It was narrated from a child’s viewpoint, detailing a scenario where a deranged woman picks up a child from school and takes him home, having taken control of his parents. The narrative focuses on his struggle to escape her tyrannical grasp. Though I put it on the shelf at that time, the tale stuck with me.”

“As I began developing Weapons, I faced uncertainty regarding the fate of the children. I was merely exploring the mystery until I hit about 50 pages into the script, when I recalled that intriguing element of my old story. It dawned on me, ‘This could seamlessly fit into my current narrative.’”

Weapons is currently available for digital purchase in the United States, with a 4K UHD release scheduled for October 14, 2025.
