NewJeans Minji, a member of an online community, gained attention when a netizen expressed surprise at the idol’s tan complexion.
The “How Sweet”singer caught the eye of K-pop enthusiasts when an OP shared her photo with the caption:
“She looks completely bare-faced, but I didn’t know she was this tan.”
In the picture, Minji is captured exiting the company’s car with a natural look. Since its release, the article has gained over 127k views.
The tone of the OP led netizens to believe that they were intentionally mocking the young idol’s skin color, possibly inciting hate towards her.
Despite the alleged intention, Bunnies (NewJeans fandom) were able to come to the rescue and even non-fans defended the idol, resulting in the failure of the alleged intention.
Upon viewing the photo, they were in awe of Minji’s natural beauty and remarked that her tan skin only enhanced her already radiant and alluring appearance, even without makeup.
- “But isn’t that Minji’s charm? Wasn’t that kind of feeling a selling point? Contrary to her innocent features, she is athletic and sporty.”
- “She’s so pretty and cool.”
- “I like her because she has a tan skin. It’s not that tan, but I prefer it because it gives a deeper atmosphere. It actually suits her and when the light hits her skin, it’s nice because I can see various sides of her without her tan skin being so noticeable.”
- “She has an innocent visual and sexy skin tone just like Seolhyun (AOA).”
- “I like Minji’s tan skin. She’s a typical Korean beauty, but only her skin is a little bit darker compared to typical aesthetic standards, so she has that unique vibe.”
- “Stop criticizing her skin color.”
It is unexpected to hear this from Koreans, as they typically ridicule K-pop idols with darker or tan skin. This is in line with the traditional Korean beauty standard, which favors fair skin as a desirable quality.
Despite some negative comments, the overall positive response highlights Minji’s significant influence and popularity in South Korea. As a member of the 4th-gen leader group NewJeans, she is also recognized as one of the most beautiful idols.
Meanwhile, Minji’s group NewJeans continues to maintain their popularity on leading domestic music charts.
The group’s recent EP, titled “How Sweet,”features two popular single tracks, “How Sweet”and “Bubble Gum,”which have received consistent love from domestic fans. These two songs have achieved high rankings on major Korean music platforms such as MelOn, Bugs, and Flo, placing second and third respectively. Additionally, the group has also gained significant attention on the US Billboard charts.
On June 21, NewJeans will further establish its presence in the Japanese market with the release of its debut single, “Supernatural.”
The quintet will be pre-releasing the MV for their track, “Right Now,”on June 17th, before its official release.
The group will also be hosting a fan meeting at Tokyo Dome on June 26th and 27th, setting a new record for the shortest time an overseas artist has entered the prestigious venue since their debut, which was just 1 year and 11 months ago.
Despite the fact that the event took place on a weekday, the fan meeting at New Jeans’ Tokyo Dome had already sold out.
