In a recent discussion, a lead developer for The Witcher 4 expressed his apprehension regarding how CD Projekt Red plans to surpass its critically acclaimed predecessor, The Witcher 3. This game is not just a favorite among gamers; it is frequently cited as one of the greatest role-playing games (RPGs) of all time.
With CD Projekt Red confirming that a new installment based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s fantasy novels is in the works, fans are understandably filled with excitement. However, the challenge remains: how can they follow up a game that continues to receive accolades and recognition nearly a decade after its initial release?
The Challenge of Innovation in The Witcher 4
In an interview with GamesRadar+, Philipp Weber, narrative director of The Witcher 4, acknowledged the ongoing debates among fans who wonder, “How can we top The Witcher 3?” He candidly admitted, “I’m like, ‘yeah, how are we going to do that?’”

Despite the weight of expectations, Weber reassured fans that this pressure is not hindering the game’s development. He emphasized that the nature of video games is subjective and that it is impossible to measure success in a “mathematical”way.
“To honor the legacy of The Witcher 3, our goal is to retain the same philosophy that guided us during its development. We want to truly care about storytelling and game design, ” Weber explained. He elaborated that the team intends to introduce new elements to ensure the sequel feels authentic rather than a mere rehash of the previous games.
Weber further revealed that his personal favorite entry in the series is The Witcher 1, despite its early criticisms. He acknowledged the likelihood of pleasing everyone is slim but remains committed to creating a game that resonates deeply with a segment of the fan base.“We just want to ensure that some people will genuinely love The Witcher 4, especially those who appreciated The Witcher 3, as our approach and ethos remain consistent, ” he stated.
As anticipation builds, it seems that fans will have to wait a little while longer to see how CD Projekt Red brings The Witcher 4 to life. The game, still in the early stages of development, is confirmed to be set in Kovir following a recent Unreal Engine 5 demonstration, indicating exciting graphical advancements and storytelling potential.
