Caio Bonfim, a seasoned race walker from Brazil, has finally fulfilled his aspiration of securing a gold medal, although this triumph came at the unexpected cost of his wedding ring.
The Challenge of Race Walking
Race walking stands out as one of the most demanding endurance events in track and field. Athletes must maintain contact with the ground throughout the race, traversing a distance of 20 kilometers (approximately 12.4 miles) at remarkable speed. This event is a key highlight of the World Athletics Championships, which was recently held in Tokyo in 2025.
Bonfim’s Path to Victory
At 34 years old, Bonfim entered the competition as a noteworthy contender, boasting numerous previous accolades, including Olympic and World Championship medals. However, until this event, he had not claimed a gold medal. Having experienced near misses—such as a silver at the 2024 Paris Olympics and several bronze medals in world championships—Bonfim demonstrated remarkable resilience throughout his career.
Earlier in the week, he had already achieved a silver medal in the 35km race walk, setting a strong precedent for his performance in the 20km walk. As the race progressed, Bonfim became a formidable force among the elite competitors.

Sacrifice and Triumph
During the race, only three kilometers in, Bonfim discovered that he had lost his wedding ring. Instead of allowing this setback to distract him, he maintained his focus and gradually navigated through the competition. In the final lap, Bonfim outpaced both China’s Zhaozhao Wang and Spain’s Paul McGrath, ultimately sprinting to the finish line to clinch his first world championship title. His victory was a moment of pride as he celebrated by waving Brazil’s flag.
In a lighthearted remark after his victory, Bonfim playfully noted that he expected his wife to forgive the lost ring, given that he had finally brought home the coveted gold medal. For him, this medal symbolizes the unwavering tenacity that he has exemplified throughout his career, and it will serve as a constant reminder each time he notices the absence of his ring.
