Before the iconic Xbox made its debut in 2001, Microsoft showcased a striking silver prototype that resembled more of a modern piece of art than a gaming console. Recently, YouTuber Macho Nacho Productions undertook the ambitious project of recreating this prototype from the ground up, investing nearly $6, 000 to resurrect this unique design.
Known for his expertise in retro console restoration, Macho Nacho employed custom-milled aluminum and made some modern upgrades to the internals, ensuring its functionality in 2025. To achieve accurate dimensions mirroring the original prototype, the team meticulously analyzed early 2000s photographs that featured the console alongside a Microsoft Sidewinder controller.
When visual references proved inadequate, the team took the initiative to travel to New York, where they captured detailed images of an actual prototype on display. These photographs were then used to construct a precise 3D model of the console.
A Remarkable Recreation of the Xbox Prototype
The finalized design incorporates an external power supply, enhancing safety by replacing the vulnerable one found in the original Xbox model. The internal components are securely housed in custom T-shaped grooves. Additionally, a small LCD screen has been integrated at the center, echoing the “reactor core” aesthetic of the prototype.
Other modern touches include an HDMI modification kit, a solid-state drive for improved performance, and software that allows users to customize fan speeds and additional settings. This combination not only elevates the user experience but also preserves the aesthetic integrity of the original design.
Interestingly, the cost of Microsoft’s original prototype was approximately $18, 000 back in 2000, which translates to around $36, 000 when adjusted for today’s inflation. In comparison, Macho Nacho’s version came in at a more modest $5, 622.66 for aluminum parts alone, not including expenditures for travel, labor, and electronic components.
At its essence, this recreated console operates just like the original Xbox, catering to those who wish to enjoy classic games on contemporary displays while celebrating the innovative design that marked Microsoft’s entrance into the gaming arena.
