Dan Trachtenberg is poised to make his mark once more with the upcoming science-fiction film, Predator: Badlands. However, he recently revealed that he would not be directing an episode of the highly-anticipated final season of Stranger Things, despite initial announcements from Netflix regarding his involvement.
The confirmation of Trachtenberg’s participation in Stranger Things Season 5 was made public in June 2023, a year after his successful release of Prey, which captivated audiences with a fresh take on the Predator franchise streaming on Hulu. His work has resonated well with fans, establishing Predator: Badlands as one of the year’s most awaited films.

Given that Stranger Things Season 5 serves as the grand finale to the beloved series set in Hawkins, it is understandable why Netflix and the Duffer brothers sought out Trachtenberg’s expertise. However, despite his departure from the project, he found a creative way to collaborate with the Duffers on his current film.
In discussing the collaboration, Trachtenberg shared, “I was actually scheduled to direct the third episode of Stranger Things. I had begun preparations when Predator: Badlands was greenlit.” He mentioned trying to balance both projects, noting the challenges of overlapping schedules. Ultimately, he had to withdraw from the series to focus on the film.
Despite this setback, Trachtenberg cleverly proposed that the Duffer brothers cameo in Predator: Badlands, to which they agreed, albeit with some apprehension about stepping into the realm of performance. He reassured them, stating, “It’s alright, we can manipulate it to sound like a computer, ” which led to their unique vocal performance as characters from the Yautja universe, ultimately adding a fun twist to the film.
As viewers await the premiere of Stranger Things Season 5, questions arise about how Trachtenberg’s expertise in horror and visual effects might have enhanced the series’ climactic showdown against Vecna (portrayed by Jamie Campbell Bower). The anticipation continues to build for both the final season of Stranger Things and Predator: Badlands.
