Two individuals who pretended to be delivery drivers in order to unlawfully obtain the home addresses and other personal information of popular idol singers under SM Entertainment have been fined during their initial trial.
Judge Lee Ho-dong of the Seoul Eastern District Court’s Criminal Division 3 specifically imposed a fine of 3 million won (approximately 2000 USD) on two individuals named Park and Kim on the 3rd for their violation of the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection.
In April of last year, Park and Kim were accused of illegally obtaining the addresses and other personal information of SM Entertainment idol singers. They had become acquainted through a voice chat platform on social media (SNS) and allegedly posed as delivery drivers to make contact with the idols.
To be precise, they convened at Kim’s residence in Gwanak-gu, Seoul, and utilized their personal phones to contact the celebrity singers. Through deceitful means, they falsely informed the victims that a package had been delivered without a unit number or with only the product name mentioned. This ploy, where they pretended to possess limited knowledge, lured the victims into disclosing their residential addresses.
The individuals affected were 3 members of NCT and 1 member of EXO.
Judge Lee stated that the defendants had conspired to deceive their victims, who were celebrities and singers, by pretending to be delivery drivers and tricking them into providing false information. These actions were deemed a violation of the Information and Communications Network Act, resulting in a fine of 3 million won for each defendant.
