Insights from Guitarist Lee Seung-yeop on aespa’s Winter

On January 18, a captivating video titled “SM Guitar Trainer Tells Idol Stories | Guitarist Lee Seung-yeop Interview Part 1” was released on YouTube, featuring guitarist Lee Seung-yeop. This interview offered a glimpse into his experiences training various K-pop idols, including remarks about recent controversies surrounding aespa’s Winter.

In discussing accusations that Winter faked her guitar performance during a concert, Lee highlighted the dedication she displayed during her preparation. The instructor vividly recalled, “Recently, I think it was last year (2023 – considering the video was filmed in 2024), when aespa’s Winter was preparing for a concert, there was a stage where she performed a guitar piece.”

Lee emphasized Winter’s intense commitment, stating that her rehearsals were so rigorous that she had suffered bleeding on her hands. This reality struck him hard, especially in light of the public’s accusations of her merely pretending to play the instrument. “What seriously upset me was that most of the public only sees the artist standing on stage – they don’t see the practice and the struggles that go into it,” he lamented.

The guitar trainer also pointed to evolving technology as a factor amplifying public scrutiny. “These days, with the advancement of technology, fans zoom in on performances on YouTube, analyzing hands and pointing out mistakes, often labeling performances as faked or hand-synced,” he explained.

In defense of Winter, Lee stated, “When I witnessed such criticisms, it felt deeply hurtful. As her teacher, I understand the importance of delivering an accurate guitar performance. However, the preparation for that concert encompassed far more than just the guitar segment. She had to balance the intricacies of dance, singing, and performing under tremendous pressure. Even seasoned guitarists would struggle in such a challenging environment. Unfortunately, many people only perceived fragments of her efforts and made exaggerated critiques, which was profoundly disheartening for me.”

Ultimately, Lee expressed a sense of regret, noting, “Reflecting on those reactions, I wish I had recognized them sooner and addressed them more effectively.” This statement embodies the ongoing challenges that idols like Winter face, revealing the unseen efforts behind their artistry.
