Out of all the girl groups trained and launched by YG, BABYMONSTER could be regarded as the most unfortunate. Despite having two debuts, their initial reception was lackluster, causing doubts among the public about their potential to follow in the footsteps of BLACKPINK. However, with a complete lineup and the return of their ace member Ahyeon, BABYMONSTER has undergone a remarkable transformation within just one month since their re-debut. Their incredible talent has left a lasting impression.
When comparing with HYBE’s rival 5th gen group, ILLIT, BABYMONSTER receives more recognition for their members’ abilities. Despite this, ILLIT has been dominating the charts with their debut single and concept. They even achieved a Perfect All-Kill and entered the Billboard Hot 100 with “Magnetic” . Though ILLIT’s path seems to be filled with triumph, they are currently facing a major setback due to their lack of strong vocal skills.
In the past few days, there has been much attention surrounding HYBE’s internal power struggles with Min Hee Jin. The creator of NewJeans did not hold back in voicing her criticism of HYBE for allegedly copying NewJeans’ concept in the creation of ILLIT. However, despite ILLIT’s initial success, they were quickly overshadowed by criticism of their vocal abilities and accusations of being “copycats”of NewJeans. This controversy has spread rapidly on social media.
Despite the chaos, BABYMONSTER has managed to garner significant attention. Their promotional activities on music shows have left a lasting impression. In fact, their song “Sheesh”has exceeded expectations and climbed to the top #10 spot on Melon, even surpassing popular artists like Jennie and Zico. This achievement has also earned them their very first music show win.
A recent viral video of BABYMONSTER’s live performance has displayed their exceptional talents, with their captivating live vocals and members standing out like precious gems. The group’s impressive blend of rap, singing and dancing has earned them much admiration. Upon witnessing BABYMONSTER’s live stage, it became clear why Yang Hyun Suk had confidently introduced them as a “monster rookie”to the public.
Has everything but just missing one hit title track
Despite BABYMONSTER’s evident talent, many bemoan the group’s lack of YG’s renowned musical direction. During their debut, BABYMONSTER failed to impress as YG appeared to have lost its touch in creating chart-topping songs. The group’s first EP was criticized for being a mere imitation of BLACKPINK’s signature hits. YG’s endeavor to replicate the success of BLACKPINK with BABYMONSTER ultimately proved unsuccessful.
Despite receiving criticism from both general listeners and industry experts, BABYMONSTER’s second title track “Sheesh”was heavily promoted by YG instead of opting for “Like That,”a composition by Charlie Puth that could have effectively highlighted BABYMONSTER’s rap prowess. “Sheesh”was deemed to be a generic hip-hop track that lacked originality and felt outdated.

Despite initially facing some challenges, BABYMONSTER’s music has gradually won over the audience. The group’s skills have played a significant role in gaining attention, and their striking visuals have also been gaining popularity online.
BABYMONSTER’s recognition is slowly increasing as Koreans are beginning to pay attention to YG’s latest girl group. Ahyeon displays an impressive stage presence, Asa is known as the “rap warrior”, and Rami stands out with her distinctive vocals. Yang Hyun Suk’s belief in BABYMONSTER is not unfounded as the group has all the necessary elements to become successful, except for that one hit song.
Despite YG’s current growth trajectory, fans remain hopeful that the promotion of BABYMONSTER will be handled more wisely. The group has the full potential to represent the new generation of Kpop, especially with the right music.
