Breaking Records: Netflix’s Latest Blockbuster Achieves Sky-High Rotten Tomatoes Score

When a movie becomes a big hit on Netflix, it is considered a success. The newest top-ranked movie has received one of the highest Rotten Tomatoes scores to date.

Six months into 2024, streaming services like Netflix have experienced significant highs and lows, offering a mix of highly acclaimed new movies and some less popular ones.

Richard Linklater’s Hit Man, which is based on a crazy true story about a regular college professor who becomes a fake hitman for the police, has become a major success. It was released on June 7 and has now become the top movie on Netflix in the US, with one of the highest Rotten Tomatoes ratings for an original film.

Hit Man has received an official certification as being fresh, with a score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. This score is lower than that of His House (100%), The Forty-Year-Old Version (99%), and licensed titles such as Godzilla Minus One, but it surpasses the ratings of The Irishman (95%), Spaceman (49%), and Extraction (67%).

Following its opening weekend, it can be concluded that fans were not taken aback.

As we speak, I am currently watching it and about to finish it. I must say, it is a fantastic movie and I loved every moment of it, one person shared on X/Twitter in response to the news.

Another concurred: “I saw it last night. It was humorous without being silly, and had some serious moments without being overly dramatic. The actors gave strong performances and the production quality was visually pleasing. The plot was easy to follow. It may not win any Oscars, but it embraces its genre and is well-done.”

Despite receiving strong initial fan reactions, many are still in disbelief that Hit Man did not receive a longer theatrical release, or in most territories, any theatrical release at all.

In an interview with IndieWire, Linklater stated that he received the best offer from Netflix, as traditional studios are no longer interested in producing content for mature audiences.

“To me, the indie film world has not changed in its goals which are to showcase films and reach an audience in some way,”he explained in an interview with IndieWire. “It is the studio world that has undergone the most transformation, as they have surrendered a certain type of filmmaking.”

“They have lost interest in producing this kind of film. They are no longer interested in creating adult entertainment.”

Despite its recent arrival on Netflix, both critics and fans appear to be in agreement, as Hit Man’s Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer and Audience Score are nearly identical.

In our own four-star review, we noted: “Linklater’s latest is a surefire source of enjoyment, featuring a diverse cast of relatable characters and a plot that offers a refreshing new perspective. However, it’s possible that audiences may eventually forget about it.”

Mark Olsen of the Los Angeles Times concurred with the sentiment: “Hit Man is undeniably entertaining. Sometimes, all you need is a pair of incredibly attractive individuals enjoying each other’s company, captured by a director who knows when to let them shine.”
