Deadpool & Wolverine director reveals the one way the movie can fail

According to Shawn Levy, the only way Deadpool and Wolverine can fail is if the audience’s laughter drowns out the dialog.

The upcoming film, Deadpool & Wolverine, is not only expected to be a major action movie of the year, but it also has a strong potential to become one of the top-performing comedies.

Featuring the highly anticipated pairing of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as Deadpool and Wolverine, the trailers have already provided a glimpse of the film’s hilarious moments (and a multitude of surprise appearances). Director Shawn Levy stated that if the audience’s laughter drowns out the dialogue, it would be considered a failure for the new movie.

In the editing room, I would often remind Ryan that we needed to adjust a certain scene because the audience was laughing too loudly at the previous line, making it difficult to hear the following three lines. This would often lead to a friendly debate between us, with Ryan ultimately coming out on top. His response would always be, “Well, that just means they’ll have to watch the movie again!”

It is quite a challenging standard for the Marvel movie to live up to, especially given Deadpool’s classification as an R-rated hero. Both of the previous Deadpool films rank in the top five of the highest-grossing R-rated movies, with the humor often stemming from graphic or surprising scenes.

Despite this, Disney’s acquisition of the upcoming Marvel movie has caused some speculation about the fate of Deadpool’s crude humor. However, it has been confirmed that the House of Mouse has no intention of interfering with the Merc with a Mouth’s comedic style.

“Although we were allowed to go hard R, I was still surprised and immensely grateful,”said Ryan Reynolds [via Fandango]. “There really was no other option.”

With the upcoming release of Deadpool and Wolverine on July 26, fans won’t have to wait much longer to see if the dialogue will finally be heard.

Now, you can stay updated on all the latest streaming movies and also watch the X-Men movies in chronological order.
