The beloved One Piece anime is preparing for a significant hiatus, officially set to begin in January 2026. This announcement comes alongside several adjustments to the series’ release schedule, raising anticipation among its dedicated fanbase.
As one of the longest-running anime series in history—only second to Sazae-san—One Piece occasionally takes breaks for production reasons. The series recently took a two-week hiatus earlier this month, illustrating the need for such pauses.
Currently, audiences are following Luffy’s thrilling battles against the Five Elders as part of the Egghead Island arc. However, Toei Animation has confirmed a more extended pause, announcing a three-month hiatus for the anime starting in January 2026.
Details of the Upcoming Hiatus
One Piece will not air new episodes from January through March 2026. This was shared via an official update on the One Piece YouTube channel on October 28, which also outlined broader changes to the franchise.
In recent years, many fans expressed frustration over the increasing number of recap and filler episodes inserted into the series. These episodes have attempted to ease production pressures for animators, but the upcoming hiatus allows the team to avoid inserting such content, especially as the storyline progresses into the Elbaph arc.
Revised Release Schedule Post-Hiatus

Upon returning in March, One Piece will transition to a new release schedule. Rather than the traditional weekly episode format, fans can now look forward to new episodes being released every two weeks. This decision aims to alleviate the workload on animators and offers the advantage of a more faithful representation of the source material, as there is no longer a need to stretch storylines with extra filler content.
The news has evoked mixed reactions among fans. Some viewers expressed excitement over receiving content that is presumably of higher quality, with one fan noting, “Sad there won’t be weekly episodes, great we’ll be eating even GREATER PEAK every two weeks.”Others, however, voiced their concerns, with comments like, “It’s been 30 years just end the damn show already, ”highlighting the ongoing tensions regarding the show’s longevity.
Upcoming Episodes and Availability

Despite the impending hiatus, fans still have much to look forward to in the months leading up to it. New episodes will continue to roll out, along with the much-anticipated second season of the live-action adaptation on Netflix. Specifically, Crunchyroll users can catch the new One Piece Episode 1148 on November 2, while Netflix viewers will need to wait an additional week, with the episode available on November 9 due to the platform’s delayed schedule.
