Chris Columbus, the renowned director of the first two Harry Potter films, recently opined that creating a film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is “impossible.” His reasoning, however, extends beyond the narrative content of the play itself.
Speculation about turning Cursed Child into a film has circulated since its debut in London in 2016. Fans have expressed hope that the original cast—comprising Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, and others—might reunite for this cinematic venture.
Nevertheless, J. K.Rowling has firmly dismissed the possibility of a film adaptation, despite Warner Bros.securing a trademark that includes motion pictures. Columbus himself voiced interest in directing the film as recently as 2021. However, after the HBO Max reunion special in 2022, Radcliffe conveyed hesitance about reprising his role, stating, “I’m never going to say never, ” although he expressed a lack of current interest.
Challenges Surrounding Cursed Child Film Adaptation

In a recent interview with The Times, Columbus shed light on these complexities. He remarked, “It’s never going to happen. It’s gotten so complicated with all the political stuff.”
Recent years have seen Rowling under fire for her comments regarding transgender individuals, prompting responses from key figures in the Harry Potter franchise. Notably, Radcliffe issued a poignant statement through The Trevor Project, a nonprofit dedicated to suicide prevention in the LGBTQ+ community. He asserted, “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I.”

Alongside Radcliffe, both Watson and Grint have publicly voiced their support for the transgender community. In return, Rowling has made statements alleging that these actors are part of a “movement intent on eroding women’s hard-won rights.”
Moreover, Rowling’s role as an executive producer on the upcoming HBO adaptation of Harry Potter has raised eyebrows among fans and cast members alike. For instance, new series star Nick Frost has openly discussed the implications of Rowling’s controversial views in interviews.
Columbus reiterated that the divide between Rowling and the actors complicates any potential project, stating, “Everyone in the cast has their own opinion, which is different from her opinion, which makes it impossible.” He added, “I haven’t spoken to Miss Rowling in a decade or so, so I have no idea what’s going on with her, but I keep very close contact with Daniel Radcliffe and I just spoke to him a few days ago. I still have a great relationship with all the kids in the cast.”
