The New SD and MicroSD Cards from Samsung Are Swifter Than Ever

SD cards can be utilized in a variety of devices, including cameras and Nintendo Switch consoles, but many of them are not particularly quick. With two new SD cards, Samsung is stretching SD to its limit.

Samsung has just introduced new Pro Plus memory cards in both standard SD and microSD capacities. The full-size SD card is available in 64 GB, 128 GB, and 256 GB capacities. The smaller microSD option is not available in 64 GB, but 512 GB is available as an alternative. Read rates are rated at up to 180 MB/s, and write speeds are rated at up to 130 MB/s. Samsung claims that they are optimized for recording 4K video and capturing high-quality images, with a V30 video rating and an A2 application rating for the microSD.

The new cards are quicker than the majority of microSD and full-size SD cards on the market, but they are not the quickest. For instance, Kingston’s Canvas React Plus cards advertise read and write capabilities of 300 and 260 MB/s, respectively. Additionally, the utmost speed depends on the SD card reader and other potential bottlenecks. The previous PRO Plus cards from Samsung were limited to 160 MB/s read and 120 MB/s write capabilities.

Unfortunately, even the fastest microSD cards are slower than the best SSDs — SATA SSDs can attain speeds of approximately 560 MB/s, while NVMe drives can be several times faster. Samsung says its online store will have the new SD cards later today (just the older cards were available at the time of writing). The full-size 64 GB card costs $12.99, while the 512 GB microSD with a USB card reader costs $64.99.
